Bucking film critics and the Left, a film showcasing the reality of child sex trafficking holds second place at the box office—after finishing No. 1 over Independence Day weekend—as it continues to outperform the summer blockbusters.
Box Office Mojo, a website that calculates box office revenues, reported that “Sound of Freedom” beat out other expected summer hits last week for the No. 2 spot on box office charts, placing it right behind the new “Mission Impossible” movie.
In over one week, “Sound of Freedom” increased its weekly gross revenue from $20 million to $27 million to reach a total gross revenue of nearly $85.5 million since its opening on July 4.
“While the entire summer movie box office lineup is underperforming, our small independent film continues to grow week over week,” said Jared Geesey, senior vice president of global distribution at Angel Studios, in a press release published yesterday. Angel Studios is also known for its distribution of the series “The Chosen,” the story of Jesus Christ as told through the eyes of His apostles.
“Sound of Freedom” is an Angel Studios film that follows the true story of Tim Ballard, a former Homeland Security agent who goes undercover in Colombia to rescue children from sex trafficking.
Ballard is played by Jim Caviezel, who is most famous for his role as Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of Christ.”
For weeks, many in the left-wing media have actively smeared the film, calling it “A Superhero Movie for Dad’s With Brainworms” and “A QAnon-Adjacent Thriller That is Seducing Americans.”
Despite these attacks, the film continues to hold its own against what were thought to be this year’s crop of summer blockbusters, such as Disney’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”
In an unprecedented feat, “Sound of Freedom” made history by increasing its revenue by 37% from the previous week’s earnings.
“There have only been 10 wide-release movies in box office history that have had a second-weekend increase greater than 35% over their opening weekend. All of them achieved this milestone during Christmas. Angel Studios is the only studio to accomplish this feat during the summer blockbuster season with ‘SOUND OF FREEDOM,’” said Brandon Purdie, head of theatrical distribution for Angel Studios, in yesterday’s press release.
What’s even more surprising is that “Sound of Freedom” had a 37% increase in sales while only being shown in 3,265 theaters nationwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
To put this in perspective, Disney’s “Indiana Jones” dropped down to No. 4 on Box Office Mojo’s report after only bringing in $12 million in revenue across more theaters—3,865—last week.
Disney does not seem to be taking the audience’s hints that they don’t want to watch the woke films the studio continues to produce. Recently, leaked photos of Disney’s in-the-works “Snow White” live-action film featuring both female and male dwarves of undwarvish heights received heavy backlash on Twitter.
While Disney continues to flounder in their audience’s criticisms, “Sound of Freedom” is answering Americans’ demands and adding more showings at movie theaters.
AMC Theatres agreed to add more screenings of the film last weekend amid rumors on social media that its theaters were actively trying to prevent audiences from viewing the film by creating technical difficulties and breaking air conditioning units.
Purdie quelled these rumors and told viewers in a press release, “AMC has been an outstanding partner for Angel Studios, and in fact, as a result of the movie’s performance and consumer demand, AMC has agreed to add additional screens for ‘Sound of Freedom’ this weekend.”
Some people on Twitter are attributing the movie’s success to its “Pay It Forward” system of buying tickets. Individuals have the option of buying tickets for others so that they can see the movie for free.
