Twitter users are questioning the health risks of “transgender milk” after a male posted a TikTok video expressing his desire to produce milk for others’ babies.
“I have always wanted to lactate,” the man, who appears to identify as a woman, explains while telling viewers he wants to set up a GoFundMe page so he can buy another electric pump to produce breast milk he will feed to babies. The man appears not to have set up a GoFundMe campaign as of yet. The Daily Signal did not find any such campaign on the platform.
In the video, he said his doctor prescribed the drug metoclopramide. He said his doctor supported the idea that this drug with the aid of a breast pump would stimulate milk production in a male.
According to the National Library of Medicine, “metoclopramide is sometimes used to try and increase milk supply (galactagogue).” However, it was primarily produced to “treat gastrointestinal (stomach / bowel) motility issues.”
In the clip that has gone viral on Twitter after Libs of TikTok posted the video, the man says he wants “to help a family…that can’t breastfeed and does want the milk, and has the option to have transgender milk.”
According to the National Library of Medicine, metoclopramide, the most common form of which is Reglan, “can cross into the breast milk.”
Many Twitter users expressed concern about the side effects this drug could have on infants, and they pondered why a doctor is feeding into this man’s fantasies that he could become a nourishing food source for infants.
One person commented, “Assuming this substance is safe, let alone sustaining for newborns is not only dangerous – it’s abuse.”
Another commentator who claims to be a nurse wrote: “This is dangerous, and the fact that these health agencies are not putting a stop to this now should tell us everything we need to know about how much they value our safety, and the safety of our babies.”
This does not represent the first time that medical authorities appear to have given in to a man’s fantasies about being a mother. Recently, the Centers for Disease Control released a guidance sheet on biological men “chestfeeding.”
While the National Library of Medicine says that “most reports [on Reglan] have not listed any side effects in nursing infants,” it does not mention the reports that have shown side effects.
Furthermore, “studies have not been done to see if metoclopramide can cause behavior or learning issues for the child.”
The Food and Drug Administration also reports in a medication guide on Reglan that “it is not known if Reglan is safe and works in children.”
Further down on the same medication guide, the FDA says, “It is not known if Reglan will harm your unborn baby…. Reglan can pass into breast milk and may harm your baby.”
The FDA tells patients to “not use Reglan for a condition for which it was not prescribed” because in addition to seeping into breast milk it can cause parkinsonism, severe depression, and other mobility problems.
In the TikTik video, the man explains that he is fully aware of the negative side effects but that he will only be on the drug for two or three weeks, while he uses an electric pump to stimulate breast milk production.
He tells viewers that he already has one pump but needs another because, “I’m going to have to pump a lot, and that means I am going to be running around out on the streets pumping too.”
After explaining that he has done all the research on this topic, he calls himself a “trailblazer” because “there’s nothing, no doctors, nothing that has anything [to do] with a transgender wanting to lactate.”
“The notion that men can “breastfeed” is yet another step our culture is taking down the path of insanity,” Delano Squires, a research fellow at The Heritage Foundation’s Richard and Helen DeVos Center for Life, Religion, and Family, told The Daily Signal.
Men like him claim to be on “the so-called party of science,” but in reality, “a baby who is depending on milk from a biological male will die unless some other form of nourishment is provided.”
