House Democrats Move to Force Pro-Life Taxpayers to Fund Abortions

House Democrats continue their attack against the pro-life movement, with their latest victim being the long-standing Hyde Amendment.

The House Democrats, led by Representative Barbara Lee D-Calif., plan to reintroduce the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH) Act, which would repeal the Hyde Amendment and force United States citizens to have their taxes fund abortions.

The Hyde Amendment has been one of the most important pieces of pro-life legislation enacted in United States history. Republicans and Democrats have supported the amendment since its enactment in 1976. The bipartisan amendment prevented Medicaid funds from paying for abortion, and members of Congress and presidents of both parties continued to uphold it for decades.

But the political landscape is different in a Dobbs America, and House Democrats are pursuing every opportunity to attack pro-life legislation. Earlier this year, House Republicans passed the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, only getting one Democrat to support the pro-life legislation.

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, one of America’s leading pro-life groups and defender of the Hyde Amendment, issued a statement about the new legislation.

More than 2.5 million Americans are alive today thanks to the Hyde Amendment, yet pro-abortion Democrats continue to ignore the clear will of the people in their push to impose abortion on demand and even infanticide, paid for by taxpayers, nationwide,” Marjorie Dannenfelser, the pro-life group’s president, said in a statement Thursday.

“Polling released this month confirms 60% of Americans oppose using tax dollars to fund abortion domestically, and 78% oppose using tax dollars to fund abortion abroad,” Dannenfelser added. “That strong opposition transcends gender, race and economic status and even encompasses a full third of rank-and-file Democrats. The answer is to make the Hyde Amendment permanent government-wide, and we support legislation introduced by Rep. Chris Smith, Senator Roger Wicker and their colleagues to do exactly that.”

The bill will face opposition from the newly Republican-majority House.
